Tutka Bay Lodge’s Field Notes on Homer, Alaska

Field Notes are firsthand travel recommendations for and by our ECT Clubhouse members. Get the lowdown on destinations across the globe from travelers and locals alike. This week, Kirsten Dixon, owner and founder of Tutka Bay Lodge, shares her insider intel on Homer, Alaska.

Homer has been called Alaska's most charming town, and not without serious merit. It is a seaside hamlet at the "end of the road" overlooking Kachemak Bay, a stunning maritime estuary filled with whales, sea otters, shorebirds, and other maritime wildlife wonders. Home to Kachemak Bay State Park (the State's first park and preserve), a vibrant fishing harbor, plus artists, chefs, musicians, farmers, and other creatives that make this town a lively and colorful home harbor,Tutka Bay Lodge is only 25 minutes away by boat from "downtown Homer".

My recommendations for visiting Homer include:

Shop

Synergy Farm: The Farmer's Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer months. Don't miss Synergy Farms' delicious white baby turnips and pickles from the nearby Russian Orthodox village. Crafts, music, food, and fresh Alaska vegetables make this a must-do.

Drink

Grace Ridge Brewery: It is one of MANY local breweries crafting Alaska beer, mead, sodas, and other interesting drinks, alcoholic or not, with Alaska's pure cold and clean water as a major secret ingredient.

Do

Art trail: The Homer Chamber of Commerce has a map of the local "art trail" featuring different galleries and artists who open their studios and sometimes homes to visitors looking for authentic local art.
