The El Camino Travel Guide to Greece With Kids

Written by Sarah Tinoco

In true ECT fashion, we’re heading off the beaten path and steering away from Mykonos and Santorini for now and bringing you recommendations for the capital city of Athens, the southern mainland peninsula of The Peloponnese, and Greece’s largest island, Crete. This guide has been crafted in collaboration with Greece experts Nektaria Panagiotari and Christina Papavlasopoulos from Myths and Muses, and family travel expert, Samantha Runkel from Heyterra Travel.

Stay/Eat

Swoon over AthensWas, a luxury design hotel located in the heart of downtown Athens on Dionysiou Areopagitou, steps from the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Its rooftop restaurant, SENSE Restaurant, offers arguably some of the best panoramic views of Athens, including an unbeatable view of the Acropolis.

Stay

Dream at Kinsterna Hotel, a grandiose boutique hotel located in a stone mansion dating back to the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The hotel offers views of the fortress of Monemvasia, overlooking the Aegean Sea. It also includes multiple natural spring water pools, including a family pool, steps away from an indoor playground for kids.

Do

Head to the city of Rethymno in Crete. Visit the Fortezza of Rethymno, the citadel of the city built by the Venetians and captured by the Ottomans, and the nearby Monastery of Arkadi, a sacred Eastern Orthodox Monastery. Both historical sites are equally informative and intrepid for kids.

Also included in the guide:

  • A design-forward, family-friendly, contemporary beachfront property in Chania

  • A non-profit organization fostering contemporary visual arts and culture

  • A boutique hotel run by a woman who "is fantastic, breakfast is delicious, and it fits into the design aesthetic ECT members resonate with"

  • The “best food we had in Greece, really authentic Cretan, and such a wonderful experience”
