The El Camino Travel Guide to Helsinki, Finland

Written by Kayla Doris

Helsinki isn’t your typical capital city—it’s compact (home to just half a million people), laid-back, unpretentious, and entirely surrounded by nature. Situated between the Baltic Sea and nearby forests, this water-facing city is bordered by the sea on three sides. Nearly 40 per cent of its area consists of green spaces and its nearby islands (over 300 of them) offer sandy beaches, cliffs, nature hikes, and beautiful camping locations. But if you’re more cosmopolitan than country, the Finnish capital still has you covered. Recognized as a UNESCO City of Design, it’s home to architectural landmarks, design museums, and a dedicated Design District full of boutiques, galleries, and art studios. Helsinki’s other distinct offering is that its location near the Arctic Circle makes for dramatic seasonal changes. Visit during the summer and experience Midnight Sun where the days feel endless and the outdoor atmosphere is buzzing after long winter months. In the winter, embrace its snowy charm by partaking in Finnish sauna culture, ice skating, and its famous Christmas markets. Which side would you prefer to experience?

We’ve collaborated with local insiders, Paola Suhonen— fashion designer and founder of Ivana Helsinki, and Anne Kainulainen—Front Office Manager at NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa, plus ECT members to curate a list of insider recommendations for eating, drinking, shopping, and sightseeing your way through the city.

Do

Don’t miss out on Löyly, a contemporary complex that offers sauna experiences alongside a restaurant and bar. Situated along the waterfront in the Hernesaari district, the building is a showcase of modern architectural design. ECT member, Kate G., recommends it for a “fun sauna experience.” Opt for a Sunday morning session to enjoy morning yoga in the fireplace room before your private sauna session.

Also included in the guide:

  •  A semi-remote, wild beach area that’s “a gem of eastern Helsinki”

  • A museum “not even most of the people living in Helsinki know about”

  • The gallery that celebrates art, craftsmanship, sustainability, and harmony with nature

Shop

Shop smock dresses, statement trousers, and ditzy shirts at Ivana Helsinki, a Finnish fashion and lifestyle brand by designer Paola Suhonen. The brand is known for blending Scandi aesthetics with bohemian elements (the pieces are inspired by Paula’s “endless desire to be on the road.” Each design is limited to just 50 pieces manufactured to elevate their artistic value and reduce overconsumption. Find the store in Marjaniemi within a 1970s studio that adds to the retro vibe.

Also included in the guide:

  • Where to snag second-hand designer handbags and vintage wardrobe treasures

  • Home pieces, clothing, and accessories that feature original illustrations by visual artists

  • A market hall to shop souvenirs and local delicacies
