Who is Anja Tyson?

My name is Anja Tyson, and I work with brands - mostly in fashion and beauty but some other areas too - to develop purposeful, sustainable businesses and storytelling. I've spent my career working in the fashion industry, which gave me amazing opportunities to travel and to experience other cultures and perspectives. In my free time, I work with NPOs, write The Culture of Care, operate a mutual aid directory called NeverSleeps, and am also, importantly, a mom. :)

Where are you going and who with?

I'm going to Naples - I fell in love with the city last summer and definitely plan on making it a regular stop for the foreseeable future. Naples is incredibly beautiful, has delicious food, is absolutely singular in its people, and it's a walking city, which is absolutely crucial for me as a New Yorker. It's also so easy to hop on a quick ferry to head to Ischia or Procida or the Amalfi Coast, which is so freeing.

Solo traveler or travel partner?

On this trip I'm bringing my partner, because I am blessed to be with someone I really enjoy traveling with, and we both fell in love with Naples for the same reason. But I love traveling alone, and would go to Naples by myself anytime. Northern Italians give it a bad wrap because there is some crime, but I found it to be pretty similar to New York.

Whatโ€™s your travel style?

If I'm visiting a city, I'll take the days I'm in that city to really take it in. I'll definitely sleep late and take an afternoon nap, but with the rest of my time I want to be eating, meeting people, observing the city, and getting to know the local culture. Naples is amazing for this... and when I get tired of the city life I'll take a ferry to the beach to unwind.

Anjaโ€™s Naples Hit List

What I Like.

It's is a pretty diverse ecosystem of neighborhoods, so when you walk or drive around you get to see a lot of different lives. People are not exceedingly nice or insincere, which I appreciate. It's easy to find inexpensive, delicious produce everywhere, and the local personal style makes for fascinating people-watching.

What I Recommend.

Carry-on or check-in?

Carry on forever. I do not want to be worried about luggage, or struggle with bags when I just want to be enjoying myself.

Hotel or Airbnb?

In Naples, I love Airbnb's, because Neapolitan apartments are.... amazing! And cannot be experienced anywhere else.

None of the above! Read a book. Elena Ferrante's The Days of Abandonment or The Lying Life of Adults. She captures Naples so beautifully.
