This was a journey that stood out for its combination of culture, nature, and architectural beauty, along with the unique experience of local flavors.
A Snippet of Ana’s Itinerary
“Later, I arrived in the charming town of Valladolid, where I had lunch at a traditional Mayan cuisine restaurant. And after a short 15-minute drive away, I visited the Cenote Saamal, taking advantage of the fewer crowds at the end of the day. As the sun set, I strolled down the peaceful Calzada de los Frailes, exploring its quaint stores and indulging in a marquesita (a local dessert) in the main square. The next stop was Mérida…”
Tips & Tricks
Depending on the length of the trip, hiring a driver is highly recommended. It simplifies the journey and offers the flexibility to make as many stops as you wish without wasting time.
Also, the area can get quite hot, so it's advisable to take walks either early in the morning or after sunset to stay comfortable. The best months to visit are November to March.
Keep in mind; it's worth bringing cash with you. In Cobá, you will need it for paying the entry permit fee and renting bikes. Also, many street food stands and artisans take cash only.
Food for Thought
My absolute favorite spot is Casa Lecanda, a true oasis in the heart of the city. Just a block away is Micaela Mar y Leña, a fantastic place for a remarkable gastronomic experience. Start with the uchepos de camarón (shrimp tamales) and pair them with the local beer, the Patito Belgian Blond Ale. Walk a few more blocks down Calle 47, and be sure to stop at Adela for some delicious ice cream. The lavender flavor was awesome!
