The El Camino Travel Guide to Cusco, Peru
Written by Kayla Doris
Welcome to Cusco City! Most people are introduced to Cusco by way of Machu Picchu, only to discover it’s more than a gateway to one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites. Cusco itself is a historical gem. The city was once the capital of the Inca Empire (a powerful civilization that flourished in South America before the arrival of the Spanish), who considered the city the spiritual and political center of the world. The Inca built the city in alignment with celestial events; its layout is believed to represent a sacred animal (many say it’s the shape of a puma). The Inca legacy is evident through ancient architecture, traditional festivals, and the Quechua language, which blends with the visible Spanish influence seen in the historical plazas, churches, and colonial-era buildings. The city is relatively small, but there’s a lot to discover, especially when considering the Cusco region as a whole. Beyond the city limits lies the Sacred Valley, a stunning terrain between Cusco City and Machu Picchu dotted with lush landscapes, ancient Inca sites, and traditional communities that have preserved customs and crafts. There’s no shortage of advice online for Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, so we’ve done what we do best by covering the best places to wine, dine, shop, and experience the local culture beyond the iconic sites.
We’ve collaborated with local insiders, Hannah Jenkinson—founder of HJK Studio, Cristina Jaimes—chef at Marcelo Batata Cooking Class, and the team from Inkaterra La Casona, to curate a list of insider recommendations to the city. We’ve also included tips from ECT members, plus friends of ECT, Jyl Kutsche, owner of Green House Villas and majestic disorder founder Kelley Mullarkey.
