Field Notes are firsthand travel recommendations for and by our ECT Clubhouse members. Get the lowdown on destinations across the globe from travelers and locals alike. This week, Krista M., shares her highlights from San Cristobel, Mexico.

My recent trip to San Cristobal was absolutely magical! This designated "Pueblo Mágico" (aka magic town) in Mexico's Chiapas region, offers visitors a captivating blend of vibrant colonial architecture, rich indigenous cultures, and warm hospitality. This charming town, nestled in the Central Highlands, is known for its colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and red-tiled roofs that create a picturesque setting. It's a perfect blend of everything wonderful.

Eat

Malaak Al Horno - incredible Lebanese restaurant! The food here is so fresh and the owner is SO accommodating. My sister has a gluten allergy so he made the tabbouleh with quinoa.

Drink

Cafe Ka - the region is known for its coffee, but if you don't have time for a day trip to a coffee plantation but want a local experience you must visit Alejandro at Cafe Ka. We went in for a cup of coffee and ended up staying and talking with him for 2 hours of stories. His passion for coffee and connecting with people is unmatched.

Do

Textiles Tour - We booked a tour with Chiapas Experiencias, with Rudy as our tour guide. He grew up in the area and has a rich knowledge of the history and culture, which made for a truly authentic experience. He took us to visit with a collectivo of female artisans in the nearby town of Chamula (known for making traditional wool skirts) and Zincatan (known for waist loom and embroidery).

Also included in her notes: An “incredible and authentic” cooking school that she highly recommends, a “beautiful bohemian vibes restaurant…we loved it so much we went twice,” and the activity she recommends for your first day.
