The El Camino Travel Guide to San Sebastian, Spain

Written by Kayla Doris

Welcome to San Sebastian, the picturesque coastal city that’s renowned for its world-class cuisine. Located between France and Spain, the Basque Country stands as somewhat of a mystery to historians. Despite being Europe's oldest people, the Basque have managed to preserve their language, customs, and traditions throughout the ages, and are fiercely proud of their unique identity. Offering history, culture, a renowned food scene, and beautiful beaches, San Sebastian ticks all the big boxes. But while there is plenty to offer, this is a place where we recommend slowing down. The perfect trip is spent wandering its beautiful cobbled streets, indulging in pintxos, savoring Txakoli wine, and connecting with the surrounding nature. In other words, it’s a city to enjoy life's simple pleasures, which sounds pretty good to us.

We’ve collaborated with experts and insiders including ECT Spain Expert, Danny Adler from Adler and Marlow and Alejandra Pardo, manager at Hotel Iturregi, plus members of ECT.

Stay

If you want to immerse yourself in nature while still being within driving distance of the city, then add Hotel Itureggi to your itinerary. The tranquil home is set among Txakoli vineyards with stunning coastal views and a beautiful garden and pool. Lavish farmhouse is the vibe; the eight bedrooms all have vintage-style furnishings and rustic elements, alongside luxury bedding and spacious bathrooms. There’s no restaurant for dinner, but there are plenty of options in the surrounding area of Getaria. Hotel manager, Alejandra Pedro, also says, “There is a really nice coastal walk or mountain walk from the hotel to Zarautz, a beautiful small town with a large beach that’s famous for the surf vibes.”

Also included in the guide:

  • The dreamiest 20th-century villa with romantic suites and gorgeous surroundings

  • An eco-friendly hotel that boasts a rooftop pool and on-site spa and yoga space surrounded by trees

  • An Airbnb in walking distance to the Old Town with balconies that overlook the ocean

Drink

Enjoy an evening tipple beneath a stunning domed ceiling at Zenit Hotel Convento. Located in the entrance of a former convent-turned-hotel, the space still features stained glass, religious figurines, and a muraled ceiling. ECT Spain Expert, Danny Adler, says this is a good option if you’re in the mood for cocktails.

Also included in the guide:

  • A castle-turned-bar that offers the best view in the city

  •  A hostel/bar/event space that offers a great atmosphere for laid-back drinks with an eclectic group of people

  • An upscale floating bar that’s great for sunset drinks or late night dancing

Galerna Jan Edan Jatetxea is a small restaurant in Gros that comes recommended by ECT Spain Expert, Danny Adler. The eatery embeds a maritime theme throughout its menu with fresh fish and seasonal vegetables. The tasting menu changes throughout the year, but expect to discover a modern take on traditional fare, fresh ingredients, and delicious dishes.

Also included in the guide:
