The El Camino Travel Guide to Dubai, UAE
Written by Kayla Doris
Nowhere else blends the future and the past quite like Dubai, largely considered the cultural and economic heart of the UAE. From futuristic shopping malls to architectural marvels and man-made islands, Dubai is a place that’s constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible. Yet just 50 years ago, it was a small fishing port with sand dunes stretching as far as the eye could see. While the city has rapidly evolved, pockets of the old Dubai still exist in areas like Al Fahidi, Dubai Creek, and the souks, and traditional Emirati values, customs, and hospitality remain deeply rooted in everyday life. But largely, the city lives up to its association with luxury and excess—an extravagance that some will find alluring, while others may view with disdain. Whether you love it or hate it, there is no denying that it’s unlike anywhere else, and it really is a place where you can find anything and everything—world-class hospitality and fine dining, extreme sports for adrenaline junkies, sprawling desert landscapes, and cutting-edge art galleries and events for culture enthusiasts. In recent years, there’s been a move towards smaller-scale concepts that provide a contrast to the city’s glitz and glamor, giving you a taste of Dubai’s emerging and more eclectic side.
We’ve collaborated with local experts, food writer and author—Laura Lai Coughlin, and Oo La Lab’s Community Partnerships Manager—Khadija Jane, and also tapped our personal network to curate a list of insider recommendations for eating, drinking, shopping, and sightseeing your way through the city.
