The El Camino Travel Guide to Sicily, Italy

Written by Emma Brode

A vibrant island off Italy’s southern coast, Sicily is a feast for the senses. With a rich history, diverse landscapes, and a cuisine that reflects centuries of cultural influences, this island captures the essence of Italy in every possible way. “The western coast tends to be more rustic than the eastern coast but every inch of the island is incredible,” says ECT Italy Expert Livia Hengel. “It feels like a microcosm of Italy, offering a great balance of food, nature, art, culture, highs and lows. The food and people are honestly incredible everywhere (Sicilians are *so* hospitable) and you’ll definitely want to rent a car to see all of it.” Here, we’re diving into the distinct regions of Sicily to guide you through this unforgettable island.

We’ve collaborated with local experts including Carmel Ruggeri, founder of Sicilian Food Tours, Alfio Puglisi, owner of Palazzo Previtera, Christine Honrado - owner of Casa Esther, and Valeria from Studio Mud, plus recs from ECT Italy Experts Livia Hengel and Zoe Shapiro.

Stay

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Etna in the heart of Linguaglossa, Palazzo Previtera offers a rare chance to experience Sicilian life in a truly extraordinary setting. This luxury guesthouse doubles as the only Etna Living Museum, preserving over 500 years of Sicilian history. Its beautifully restored 18th-century interiors blend with vibrant contemporary art, thanks to an ongoing gallery program featuring internationally acclaimed artists in residence. The decor is also a feast for the senses: intricate patterned wallpapers, traditional Sicilian tiles, plush curtains, and crystal candleholders create an elegant atmosphere throughout its four refined rooms, two cottages, and a lush garden boasting panoramic views of the volcano.

Also included in the guide:

  • A welcoming, family-run B&B in a restored 20th-century residence, recommended by our Italy expert Zoe Shapiro

  • Sea-view terraces and direct access to a private beach at a boutique hotel in Cefalu

  • A private two-bed apartment set in a beautifully restored 19th-century building with contemporary interiors

Drink

B.O.A.T.S. offers the best cocktails in Syracuse and all of Sicily!” says Christine. With outdoor seating overlooking the ruins of the 6th century Apollo Temple, this stylish cocktail bar takes its name from the acronyn for “Based On a True Story.” Try the signature Madonna or a classic Campari Spritz with an order of fresh bruschetta.

Also included in the guide:

  •  A boutique winery that expresses the deep bond between wine, art and territory

  • A small bar in Palermo that’s “very good for socialising and nice gigs and drinks at night”

  • A luxurious wine-tasting experience in a family-run estate with breathtaking views

Eat

“A stylish restaurant in the heart of Taormina, Nunziatina is inspired by the warm welcome and clamour of the typical Sicilian home. We love the eccentric and colorful design, which reflects the opulence of Sicily’s typically baroque architecture,” says Alfio of Palazzo Previtera. Both refined and rustic, the menu is peppered with local and seasonal ingredients in dishes like burrata with zucchini flowers or prawn and eggplant risotto. Book ahead for dinner on the panoramic terrace overlooking the gulf of Naxos.

Also included in the guide:

  • A beloved Italian Nonna serving “must-try Genovese biscuits”

  • The best place to go to find 15-course seafood tastings with wine for only 60 euros

  • The perfect restaurant for sampling local favorites like arancini and sarde beccafico
