Field Notes are firsthand travel recommendations for and by our ECT Clubhouse members. Get the lowdown on destinations across the globe from travelers and locals alike. This week, travel curator, Giorgia Matrone, shares her intel on Costa Brava, Spain.

This past August, my family of 4, drove from Italy to Spain for an on-the-road trip through the South of France and Costa Brava. We spent several days in Costa Brava, staying in two very nice eco campsites, having the time to explore every little town, try many nice restaurants, shop in cool stores and live the true Mediterranean dream.

A lot of exciting new projects are opening here, such as lots of boutique hotels and rustic-chic farmhouses which I have site-checked when there, and are really embodying the concept of slow travel. It is a great combination for someone traveling to Barcelona who wants to add a beach stay, and who is comfortable driving around.

Stay

WeCamp: Relax at the ultra-chic WeCamp Cadaques where we stayed, which is absolutely perfect for kids! The area is all white and bright blue houses, with a nice wrap-around promenade to stroll along the waterfront with an endless choice of restaurants.

Eat

La Blava: Ask for the table facing the sea (pictured right), and enjoy some of the best tapas! Go for the grilled octopus or the carrot cake, you won’t be disappointed.

Shop

Colmado: Cadaques has the nicest homeware stores. Don’t miss out on Colmado.

Also included in her notes:

  • an “edgy and sophisticated restaurant with a very cool vibe”

  • the most charming and picturesque town where “the energy is so strong that you never want to leave”

  • a beach spot that’s great for “comfy food and nice music”
